Murray Robertson | Composer, Performer, Arranger

Welcome!

I am a composer and performer from Central Ohio, currently living in Tallinn, Estonia studying at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. I play tuba and bass trombone with groups around the Columbus area.

Stuff I Do…

  • I compose in a wide range of styles, from contemporary classical to electroacoustic music as well as contemporary jazz music. My compositions have been performed by Zakk Jones, the Capital University Chamber Percussion Ensemble, as well as the Capital University Trombone Choir and Capital Thunder, the university’s tuba-euphonium ensemble. I am currently working towards completing a bachelor’s degree in composition from Capital University. My primary teachers are Dr. Dina Lentsner and Tony Zilincik. Other instructors include Helen Tulve (EAMT), Paolo Girol (EAMT), Dr. Nicole Piunno (Capital Univ.), and Stan Smith (Capital Univ.).

  • I am a low brass multi-instrumentalist, with experience on tuba, bass trombone, tenor trombone, and euphonium. Recent performances have been with Vaughan Weister’s Famous Jazz Orchestra, the St. Joseph’s Cathedral’s Brass Quintet, Westerville Community Theatre, the Dublin Silver Brass Band, and the Jerrod Shackelford Big Band. While I am studying at Capital University, my primary teacher in tuba is Tony Zilincik.

  • My work in arranging, transcribing, and copying sheet music has put my charts in front of many different performers. I arrange frequently for brass ensembles, from tuba quartet and brass quintet groups to larger ensembles like combined low brass ensembles and brass choir. I arrange for large ensembles as well, for example the Lancaster High School Band of Gold and Capital University Big Band have performed arrangements of mine. I have also done copyist work for both classical and jazz groups, such as the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption’s choir (with string quartet and brass quintet), and Stan Smith’s large jazz ensemble. I have experience with solving anything from making a missing part to making a complete set of parts from a score (or visa versa). Click on the “arranging and copying” button below for more info.
